ABOUT

Sarah Elgart creates site-specific performances that unite movement, color, music, and media into seamless, genre-defying, public spectacles. Using light, sound, scale, striking visuals and visceral movement, Elgart engages the audience and creates an experience in which familiar locations are transformed from the mundane into the magical, prompting viewers to see with new eyes. Elgart’s work mixes elements of humor with powerful, raw dance and movement that speaks inherently about the human condition, and the desire to fly in a gravity-bound world.

Sarah Elgart is an award-winning choreographer / director who creates original work for dance, theater, film, circus, communities, site-specific locations and more. Elgart has staged public projects at places as diverse as corporate plazas and bus terminals such as the Music Center, the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Center. She has worked with notable directors including David Lynch, Julien Temple, Anton Corbijn, Catherine Hardwicke, and JJ Abrams. Elgart is the recipient of the Vanguard Award for Choreographic Innovation, two NEA’s, a Rockefeller/NEA Festival Grant, multiple grants from the CAC, DCA, and more, and her work has been commissioned by organizations including The Getty, Los Angeles World Airports, and BodyTraffic. Elgart collaborates regularly with renowned composers including Nels Cline of Wilco, Yuval Ron, and Paul Chavez / FELTLIKE. Her newest work, Everywhere Nowhere, will premiere at the Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Sarah Elgart’s site-specific work traditionally exists outside of the rubric of, although can be adapted to, conventional proscenium theatre spaces. Site-specific performances can incorporate volunteer performers from community performance workshops.

Particularly masterly .... Highly charged and emotionally riveting work.

A marvelous event opened the annual Dance Camera West film festival ... Suddenly a tall tube of ruby fabric mysteriously appeared and began to sway in the balmy air ... It was dance maker Sarah Elgart’s fine execution (using) choreography to augment a familiar locale and cause an audience to see with new eyes.
Debra Levine

Even a modicum of marvel (is) generally out of fashion during these skeptical days. But... there are artists like choreographer Sarah Elgart who are making miracles.
